Effective Online Advertising

As part of this Mass Communication blog I try from time to time point out interesting articles that can help enhance my readers’ understanding of the field. Advertising falls squarely under the heading of mass communication and online advertising is such a fun grey area to study.

As a corollary to one the hideously long papers I wrote for this past semester I wrote a very short version or overview of the very basic points of my paper on The Effectiveness of Online Advertising for our company’s blog. Here is a short exerpt:

Online advertising. You just got a bit scared didn’t you? Well don’t. Many times companies big and small begin to get sweaty palms when their agency suggests including an online component in their mixed media campaign. There has been myriad research into the effectiveness of online advertising and just how to track that effectiveness. While the jury may still be out among the self styled ‘gurus’ of the web, one can turn to well respected journals and research and begin to form a clearer picture of the landscape of the digital world.

You can read the rest of the post on effective online advertising here. I have tons of info on this area, if you are interested drop me an email and I’ll point you in the right direction. (Email on the About page).

Blog Update, Update

This is what happens during the last two weeks of the semester.

Here is a quick update on the state of the next blog update – I’ll be M.I.A. for the next week and a half as final papers are crushing me. Expect to see some deliciously new content the first week in April. As always the offer is always open for guest posts if you happen to want to rant on any topic mildly tangential to Mass Comm. Just drop a note to my email (you can find it on the About page). -g.d.

New Theory Overview: Technological Determinism

We’ve added a new theory overview to the theory overview page outlining the basics of Medium Theory (aka Technological Determinism) which was championed by Marshall McLuhan.

We’ll try to continue to add more and more theories as we have the time to do so, if anyone has any suggestions or theories they would like to see, let us know in the comments!

Special thanks to Ken Rosenberg for all his help on this one! Check it out here. -g.d.

Staying up to date in the Mass Comm Arena

I know it goes without saying, but I’m going to say it. If you are serious about the study of Mass Communication and I sincerely hope you are… You should try to stay abreast of happenings in our field. Yes, you should! Not only is it great fodder for class and paper ideas but it’s damn fascinating too. Here are a few resources to help you do just that:

AEJMC (Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication)

  • AEJMC – Yes, the conferences are a bunch of professors drinking copious amounts of alcohol and yelling at each other about the merits (or lack thereof) of Agenda Setting but it also publishes JMCQ (Journalism & Mass Comm Quarterly).Which, for the $40 or so a year membership you get all the publications out of there. The last two journals are in line for my summer reading.
  • Definitely worth your time to follow them on Twitter.
  • Fan them on Facebook.

There is the very basic 101 course on keeping your ear to the ground. Feel free to share any other ideas or good pubs in the comments! -g.d.
